Private Message Marketing Reeks of Scams

If you’ve been around on the internet long enough, you have likely received unsolicited messages via direct messaging, be that through social media or email. It seems to be a rite of passage, telling you that your profile is starting to garnish attention. But after you get a few of those messages, you start to see the patterns of those who are pretending to be interested in what you are doing, only to try to sell you something.

I don’t know what it is about the publishing industry, but we seem to accumulate a lot of these. Some of them are obvious scams. And some of them are from people who are just starting out in whatever support role they have chosen to take on board to support writers. But those who are starting down the new business road, they clearly don’t understand marketing or how their tactics are making them look like a smarmy used-car salesman.

In today’s post, I want to discuss this type of marketing tactic and explain why it reeks of a scammer. And I want to explain why we should avoid using it ourselves, regardless of what we’re selling (be that books or services).

Black Wolf is being rebranded

Last month, I found myself in an awkward position where I had to seriously consider changing the name of my business.

What started as a likely scam led to me seeking legal options in protecting my business name. However, to protect my business name, the name needs to be changed. It's that simple.

Well, actually, it's not simple at all. It's a mess. But the work has already begun.

I need to fill you in on the details and explain why Black Wolf Editorial Services is being dismantled, with my editorial and coaching services moving to the Judy L Mohr brand.

Focusing on what I can control

For many years now, my husband and son have teased me about how I often get most of my "news" from social media. Occasionally, I get told by the hubby or the son about what is going on, but I haven't watched a news broadcast or read a newspaper in years. I don't feel like I'm missing out on much for having this attitude. And given the events of recent times, for the sake of my mental health, I need to even start cutting out some of the social media news too.

It's time to put a dose of sanity into the coo-coo of the world.

I’ve never read ‘The Lord of the Rings’

I'm a fan of fantasy and science fiction. I adore sinking myself into a good, thick tome. Sword and Sorcery novels can easily get me hooked so I read the full series. But there is one series that I have never read, and I never will.

The Lord of the Rings by J.R.R. Tolkien.

And the reasons have nothing to do with its contents or historical origins. It's 100% my husband's fault.

Sit back and let me tell you about what married life can be like at times.

If you don’t want people to talk about it, STAY SILENT

I've always been of the belief that if you want an idea to die, then you need to stay silent. I'm not talking about the situations where one needs to take a stand against political injustices. No, I'm talking about the book that you want to see removed from the shelves… or the bit of misinformation that needs to be buried… or the embarrassing events that happened the other night.

The fastest way to ensure that anyone knows about whatever it is that you wish would disappear and never resurface is to tell others about it. And if you share it on social media, it spreads even faster.

In today's post, I want to talk about some of the instances that I've encountered over the years where people just didn't know how to keep their mouths shut, spreading that tidbit of information that they wanted to hide because of it.
