Does my story need to have a romance subplot?

For some time now, there has been this push to include a romance subplot in books. And I've heard an ill-informed push that says, "Sex sells."

But I've read far too many published stories where the romantic subplot failed to integrate properly into the overall plot. And the number of sex scenes that I've read (including in published works) where I questioned the need for the scene altogether is higher than it should be.

In my work as a developmental editor and writing coach, I'm watching new writers crumble as they try to tackle romance subplots and open-door sex scenes. And I am seeing their stories suffer as a consequence.

It's time to tackle this issue head on and highlight why romantic subplots and open-door sex scenes could be working against you, not for you.

Black Wolf is being rebranded

Last month, I found myself in an awkward position where I had to seriously consider changing the name of my business.

What started as a likely scam led to me seeking legal options in protecting my business name. However, to protect my business name, the name needs to be changed. It's that simple.

Well, actually, it's not simple at all. It's a mess. But the work has already begun.

I need to fill you in on the details and explain why Black Wolf Editorial Services is being dismantled, with my editorial and coaching services moving to the Judy L Mohr brand.

The Birth of a New Imprint

If I take the time to really think it through, my current situation was inevitable.

I have spent years building a reputation, putting in the effort and energy to build a brand and name recognition. It's only a matter of time before someone would start to take action to undermine my efforts.

However, I didn't expect that the steps needed to protect the name would result in a change of the name.

Yep, you read that right. The decision to start taking action to register a trademark to protect my business name led to the decision to actually change the business name. My publishing imprint has an entirely new name (registered business name and everything). Whereas my editorial and coaching services will be moved under my Judy L Mohr brand.

Let me set the stage and fill you in on the complexities of the mess.

What type of series are you writing?

I've been thinking about the construction of series when it comes to fiction for some time. This is in part because I have several clients who are working on series, but I too am working on multiple different series myself within my own fiction writing.

How exactly one approaches a series will depend on the nature of the series itself. Each type of series comes with its own advantages and disadvantages. And there are some commonalities between the different types of series, but there are also some distinct differences.

In today's post, I want to break down the different types of series that might exist and point out some of the things that you will need to consider when working on a series of that type.

Focusing on what I can control

For many years now, my husband and son have teased me about how I often get most of my "news" from social media. Occasionally, I get told by the hubby or the son about what is going on, but I haven't watched a news broadcast or read a newspaper in years. I don't feel like I'm missing out on much for having this attitude. And given the events of recent times, for the sake of my mental health, I need to even start cutting out some of the social media news too.

It's time to put a dose of sanity into the coo-coo of the world.
